Free Mp3 Music At Last

Saturday, October 25th, 2008
Paul McCartney
Catherine Harvey asked:

One of the leading music producers, Universal Music, have given the go-ahead to make free music downloads available. This will see mp3 music provided to the masses but not those who use iPods - unfortunately this service will not be available for iPod users and the tracks will not be transferable to a CD.

Spiral Frog is the online music store that you need to check out for your free mp3 music and they rely purely on advertising for their money. Subscription fees and fees for each track are now a thing of the past, at long last. However, eighty per cent of downloaded music usually goes through market dominators Apple iTunes music store.

It is possible that the service will be available after ninety seconds of advertising has been watched and this has its fair share of opposition. However, this isn’t really much of a hardship given that all your mp3 music will then be free. It does, though, demonstrate the commitment of the music industry to find a way to provide free music to the listeners and rid the music world of the piracy from dishonest internet users.

If you are in any doubt as to whether or not it’s all worth it, consider the fact that around 420 million tracks were downloaded last year and 60 million digital music players are expected to be sold throughout the world this coming year. All will require online mps music downloads.

Popular high street stores such as Tesco, Virgin and HMV sell music over the internet and Microsoft are about to jump on this bandwagon with the launch of Zune, a music player and download internet store. Zune will still be using the subscription method of providing mp3 music and music videos so another nice little earner for one of the richest men in the world then?

It is hoped the provision of free online music will counteract the work of those using piracy to get their tunes. There are still a staggering forty illegal downloads for every single legal download and this is something Universal hope to discourage by providing an easy, free service for those getting their music via the internet. Download speeds will be quicker and easier and free from viruses, thus encouraging people to use this method. All it needs now is for Apple to follow suit and provide an equal service to those with iPods.

So, what to do with all this free music? You may be surprised to learn that the top song for downloads is Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club by Paul McCartney. Not, as you would expect, some rapping noise from some teenybopper just in the music charts but a good, old-fashioned favourites. This tells us that either the older generation are not as technophobic as you would think or that the younger generation can actually appreciate good music. Either option is a good one!

James Blunt’s rendition of You’re Beautiful comes in as the second favourite mp3 music download proving that we are all softies at heart but don’t worry - gangster rap takes a relatively impressive third place with Ghetto Gospel from 2Pac. Charlotte Church has Crazy ***** downloaded into fourth place and Paul McCartney makes another appearance at number five with The Long and Winding Road. I guess he must have played that a lot throughout his divorce!

Mariah Carey whines her way into sixth place with We Belong Together followed by Audio Bullys and Nancy Sinatra singing Shot You Down. Razorlights appearance of somewhere Else comes in at number eight on the most downloaded tunes and Gorillaz Feel Good Inc meets it at number nine. Just scraping into the top ten downloads is Kanye West with his Diamonds from Sierra Leone. I’d personally rather have diamonds from Cartier but when it comes to mp3 music I suppose he’ll do.

American Idol: Simon Cowell Rumors, Britney and Paul Mccartney

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Groshan Fabiola asked:

The premiere of American Idol’s seventh season is well underway, with only a few weeks left to wait through. FOX is already in full swing with their promotions for the reality singing contest, and this year, a bit of minor controversy has topped the ice cream with a cherry.

This week, reports surfaced that Simon Cowell turned into some big-headed diva and bailed on a promotional photo shoot that eventually ended up with FOX losing $50,000. The rumors were immediately cleared today, as Cowell and his representatives clarified the fact that Cowell was indeed sick with a viral infection and informed FOX about it. Thus, such complaints about his behavior would be totally unfounded.

Despite his sour image on screen, Simon Cowell is a pretty funny, spontaneous and honest man. Regarding this issue, Cowell admitted that this was the first time in American Idol history that he has called in sick. As for the $50,000 figure, the tabloids just probably blew it out of proportion.

As for the rumor that Britney Spears is banned from American Idol, that isn’t true to its real sense. Again, the media just probably threw things out of proportion after American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe had a conference all with US Weekly Magazine.

In the call, Lythgoe was quoted, saying “I would have had Britney Spears last year when I thought she was trying to get it all back together again.” However, he apparently changed his mind after all the buzz the former pop princess has created recently. He added, “Britney, at this moment in time, I don’t think is well enough to do anything. I think she needs looking after. I think she needs to pull herself together.”

Ironically, he still believes that Spears is an “exceptionally talented girl” and that she desperately “needs taking care of right now.” Lastly, Lythgoe said that Paul McCartney won’t be appearing on American Idol anytime soon.

Embryo: Bringing New Life to Music

Thursday, October 16th, 2008
Paul McCartney
Paul J Egan asked:

Embryo is the debut album from nurse-turned-singer/songwriter Bloom. Exploring various genres of pop music, Bloom’s story-based album pays homage to the various artistic influences that have guided him.

Blending the artistic talents of a variety of guest musicians and singers (such as renowned jazz saxophonist, Tommaso Starace) Embryo tells the story of Gloria, a laboratory assistant and her journey.

Set in the not too distant future on the space laboratory Nemesis, hybrid embryos are being processed for research into disease.

Gloria, is transporting a container of embryos and Spartans (donor sperm) from earth to the space lab but she arrives late for the launch so has to quickly take her seat without placing the container in the hold. During the voyage a meteor shower hits the space shuttle which spins out of control causing a great deal of external damage and items to be thrown around inside. The craft is then forced to take a detour and dock at the space laboratory Onuris.

After her horrendous journey Gloria is shaken but not injured and on arrival gladly accepts the hospitality of the Onuris crew to join in their farewell party as some of the team members are returning to earth after a two year secondment. Gloria leaves the container unattended not realising it has been fractured….. and so it continues!

Six years after conceiving the album idea, Embryo was finally recorded in the legendary Tin Pan Alley Studios in London ’s Denmark Street and released on iTunes in August 2008.

Phil Bloom - a former student of the Royal Academy of Music - has been writing and performing music since he was three years old. His childhood and youth were devoted to his music and his first jobs saw him working with the likes of T-Rex and The Who.

The untimely death of his father led to a dramatic shift in direction, leading to a successful career in nursing and occupational health. Throughout this time Bloom maintained his love for music and continued to write and record music whenever the chance presented itself. This has led to the creation of an extensive catalogue with genres ranging from pop through musicals to classical ballet. This has also afforded him the opportunity to work with other uniquely talented writers such as the late, great Harold Spiro.

Highlights of his life include singing on stage with Viola Wills and meeting the Bee Gees, Marianne Faithful and Princess Diana. Bloom says recording the album ‘Embryo’ has been the most satisfying project to date and was inspired by recording in Tin Pan Alley, and one particular day Paul McCartney was in the studio to his right and the Klaxons were to his left!

Bloom is a Christian, a vegetarian, and against embryonic research and animal experimentation. Bloom now lives in Pinner in North West London where he grew up and attended the same grammar school as Elton John and Simon le Bon.

Embryo is the culmination of a lifetime of musical experience and years of dedication, written with the intention of creating an animated film based upon the story that the music relates.

The Beatles Anthology 3 - Disc One

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008
Paul McCartney
Marvin J Markus asked:

I enjoy every era of The Beatles career but my very favorite Beatles album is The White and that may be why my favorite disc of The Beatles Anthology series is disc one of Anthology 3. Many of the songs on disc one of Anthology 3 are from The White Album.

This article takes a track by track look at each of the 27 tracks on disc one.

1. “A Beginning” - This orchestral piece composed by The Beatles producer George Martin was originally meant as an intro for the Ringo sung (and Ringo written) “Don’t Pass Me By” on The White Album. I’m not a huge fan of this track but it works reasonably well as an introduction to Anthology 3.

2. “Happiness Is a Warm Gun” - This is a very basic demo version of one of my favorite songs on The White Album. It’s fascinating to me to hear such a stripped down basic early version of this song. It’s interesting to me as a way of looking into John Lennon’s creative process.

3. “Helter Skelter” - A very different version from the one well known on The White Album. Very slow like a death march. In some ways I think it’s even more intense than the final version. Although I do think they made the right choice in going with the faster version.

4. “Mean Mr. Mustard” - A very cool home demo made by John Lennon. As it’s such a simple song anyway this is pretty close to the final version. Note “sister Shelley.”

5. “Polythene Pam” - Another home demo. I like hearing these early simple versions of these songs.

6. “Glass Onion” - Includes some bizarre gibberish from John Lennon.

7. “Junk” - This song wasn’t ever released as a Beatles song. It wasn’t released until Paul McCartney put it on his debut solo album in 1970. I like this version of this song a lot. It has a simple beauty.

8. “Piggies” - Pork Chops!

9. “Honey Pie” - The Beatles take on music hall style music.

10. “Don’t Pass Me By” - Definitely not one of The Beatles best moments but it’s enjoyable enough. Even on The Beatles not so great songs there’s usually some cool bits hidden in there. I like the drumming on this one.

11. “Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da” - This has a strange sort of sound in comparison to the version people are most familiar with from The White Album. It’s hard to pinpoint what exactly makes it sound strange. I always notice the missing “ring” & “foot” backing vocals.

12. “Good Night” - Another not so great moment. Sorry Ringo! Although I think this one is more John Lennon’s fault (he wrote it.) This is one of the few Beatles songs that has never really grown on me.

13. “Cry Baby Cry” - Excellent. Not as good as the version on The White Album but still very good and there’s some neat bass sounds on this one we don’t hear on the final version.

14. “Blackbird” - Great song of course.

15. “Sexy Sadie” - I like this version a lot. It may be on par with The White Album version.

16. “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” - This is one of the highlights of Anthology 3. While I definitely prefer the heavier version on The White Album what I like about this is getting to hear such a different vision of this song.

17. “Hey Jude” - Cool version. I kind of like that the “nanana” doesn’t go on forever like on the official version.

18. “Not Guilty” - This song wasn’t released on a Beatles album. In fact it wasn’t released at all until George Harrison put it on his self titled album in 1979. I dig the guitar sounds on the outro a lot.

19. “Mother Nature’s Son” - Nice.

20. “Glass Onion” - Cool version of a great song.

21. “Rocky Raccoon” - I’ve always enjoyed this alternate version of this fun song. The flubbed lyrics make it all that much more enjoyable.

22. “What’s The New Mary Jane” - This song is absolutely insane which is why I love it. It was never released officially until Anthology 3.

23. “Step Inside Love/Los Paranoias” - “Step Inside Love” is a song that McCartney wrote for another singer (Cilla Black.) It’s very groovy to hear McCartney sing this song and I’ve always got a kick out of the silliness that is “Los Paranoias.”

24. “I’m So Tired” - Another one of my favorites on The White Album (I have a lot of favorites.)

25. “I Will” - Yup, here’s another one.

26. “Why Don’t We Do It In The Road” - I love hearing McCartney go crazy with the vocals. This may be the best example of him going all over the place vocally.

27. “Julia” - A beautiful song and a great way to close out disc one just as it closes out disc one of The White Album.

Paris Fashion Week: Who Says Paris is Best in the Springtime?

Sunday, October 5th, 2008
Paul McCartney
Mimi O Connor asked:

You haven’t lived until you’ve been to Paris in the winter — during Fashion Week of course! It may be cold and rainy, but Paris is always beautiful, and buzzing with excitement at a myriad of fashion shows, expositions and parties that even us mere mortals of the public can attend. And, if you’re lucky, you’ll get to brush elbows with celebrities and fashion world icons who jet-set over from the prior Fashion Weeks in New York, London and Milan.

The Fall/Winter Paris Prêt-a-Porter Fashion Week is the most prominent trade event for the fashion industry, when Fall fashions are rolled-out as a season preview for the world’s biggest retail buyers who’re scrambling to place their orders for fashion, handbags, jewelry, shoes, hats and cosmetics. Unlike other large industry convention hall tradeshows, Fashion Week is orchestrated citywide at some of Paris’ most prominent points of interest.

This year from February 25th to March 4th, top designers and fashion design students staged fashion extravaganzas ranging from the pinnacle of good taste to the surreal. Among the selected sites, were the Louvre, Jardin des Tuileries, Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Musée de l’Homme, le Champs-Elysee, le Tour Montparnasse, place du Trocadéro, Théâtre du Châtelet, and La Sorbonne.

Winter Paris Fashion Week 2007 took place February 26 through March 4, and featured everyone who’s anyone in the designer world, including long-time Parisian favorites Chanel, Dior, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Christian Lacroix and Givenchy.

Ah, the drama! Aside from the expected eccentric styles and surreal shows, more than a few eyebrows raised when an animal rights protestor stormed the catwalk **** in response to this year’s apparent return to use of fur as a luxury material.

London designer Stella McCartney (daughter of Beatle Paul McCartney), then made headlines for her “fur-free” show, showcasing warm alternatives to fur, with models clad in taffetas, satins, knitwear and cashmere.

Emanuel Ungaro’s Peter Dundas got everyone ready to hit the discos with his collection designed to celebrate night clubbing. Decked-out in plenty of bling and leather, the models strutted and slinked down the runway.

The most controversial show of the week had to be that of Viktor & Rolf. Dutch design partners Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren, are renowned for elaborate, wildly-imaginative shows. This year, they invented awkward contraptions that the models had to balance delicately, which were fitted with lighting and music as a kind of “personal fashion show.” The designs were somewhat gothic, reminding one of the movie Van Helsing. The poor models were also required to were stylized wooden clogs, which clip-clopped loudly as they paraded carefully down the runway.

Expectedly, there were WWII and ancient war themes in many of the fashion collections this year, incorporating tall boots, leather, fur, fatigue green, body armor, medallions and epaulettes. Even Jean Paul Gaultier revealed models wearing Scottish tartans with stylized Mohawks, as if going into battle.

Also during Fashion Week, the exclusive Paris boutique Colette, celebrated its 10th anniversary by inviting 10 art curators to spotlight a talent gallery-style on one of it’s walls. It was a fabulous way to show off it’s ultra-trendy collection of music CDs, shoes, handbags, branded water and accessories. The boutique is also renown for glamorous parties, art exhibits and dance classes, and definitely worth a visit when you’re in Paris.

Speaking of accessories, Nokia decided to unveil its Nokia 7373 Special Edition fashion phones by designer Giambattista Valli at Fashion Week, at the “Dress-your-Nokia-in-Giambattista Valli” Party. For the label-conscious, this is a must-have phone. Each one comes pre-loaded with a “behind the scenes” video for a glimpse into the life and inspiration of the designer, along with a selection of Valli graphics and the exclusive ring-tone, “Rhodium.”

Next year is sure to hold more fun and surprises. For sure, Paris in March is the place to be!

Heather Mills Gets Emotional on Radio Program

Friday, October 3rd, 2008
Paul McCartney
Groshan Fabiola asked:

Heather Mills, the 39-year old controversial contestant on Dancing with the Stars season four shed tears - tears of joy that is on KIIS FM, a radio program hosted by Ryan Seacrest.

Even though Mills’ inclusion on Dancing with the Stars has stirred numerous controversies whether about her hazy participation on the celebrity dance show, her quitting the competition or the surfacing of online bets regarding the possibility of her prosthetic leg flying off while performing dance routines, nothing tops the charts like her bitter divorce with former husband Paul McCartney.

Because of this, the radio program mostly dwelled in the various prejudiced opinions people have formed to believe about Mills since her announced separation with McCartney, and how her detractors have now positively changed their perception of Mills. Is this the “healing effect” of Dancing with Stars? Maybe it is…

Since her inclusion on Dancing with the Stars, more and more people are having a different opinion about Mills. Some even claim that they now see Mills for the real person that she really is and not some “gold digger”

almost everyone perceives her to be. As attested by one of her detractor turned supporter, Mills actually ought to have a collective apology from the biased public. There have been so many negative remarks that surfaced the news and made her reputation very unpleasant and for that many of her critics are embarrassed over their being gullible and being easily susceptible to rumors.

Upon learning that people are now having a better insight and understanding about her, Mills wept while simultaneously expressing her delight and relief. The emotional Mills even explained that she has devoted almost all her life doing charity works and is very saddened with some people’s judgment about her being an exploitative woman and a gold digger.
